WordMaster Competition: A self-driven method to improve student’s vocabulary

A tested method for learning English on Self-Effort is called WordMaster. WordMaster Competition Slogan: Learn Words, Learn Language

The WordMaster Competition is a vocabulary competition based on completing analogies. In Bangladesh’s rural areas many students are don’t know how to speak, read and write English properly. And teaching them English is a big challenge. The first reason for students’ weakness in English is their poor vocabulary. Students are not interested to learn English because they scare of this language. Not the grammar, inadequate vocabulary is the root cause of weakness in English. Good Neighbors Bangladesh Work for these children. We were contemplating on how a non-native student can acquire maximum vocabulary skill. In order to inspire them to enrich their English vocabulary, in 2004, Good Neighbors Bangladesh start inter-school WordMaster Competition in Ghatail CDP. Now this competition is going on GNBs all working areas (14 CDP).

Objectives of WordMaster competition are:

  • To overcome English scare from the students.
  • To make education interesting and challenging to the children.
  • To inspire children for self-study.
  • To increase the participation of children in co-curricular activities.
  • To improve result in public exam.

Learning new words is the essential step towards learning a language, and students don’t need the teacher’s help to do this. In the WordMaster competition, students are encouraged to learn words by self-study. The more words will get them the more score and will let them win the WordMaster prize and certificate. This is the best motivation for those children who want to learn English.

WordMaster has originated from high school levels, but this can be a universal competition involving students of all the academic levels: college, university, and common people. In GNB participants are grade 8 student only (sponsor & non-sponsor). Students have to complete 2 phase for finish this competition- the first phase of this competition is selection/preparation and Second Phase is Final. Process of this competition is School-based >CDP based>Regional based>National based. School-based are arrange by CDP with all the children of grade 8 of respective schools and CDP based are arrange by CDP with all the winner of school-based children. We give the award to inspire who win this competition and motivate them to participate in this competition.

Md. Emranul Huq Chowdhury (Chairperson of BASF) chaired the program, Ms. Rasheda K. Chowdhury (former adviser of the caretaker Government & executive director of CAMPE) was also present as a special guest.

WordMaster is a ‘learning and improving’ process and is being upgraded every year coping with the learners’ need and social context. We notice that because of these competition students’ vocabulary power and writing skill significantly increased day by day.
